Student Benefits

Students who participate in Work-Based Learning (WBL) gain experiences and skills that can only come from real-world, hands-on learning. These opportunities help students apply classroom knowledge, explore career options, and develop the confidence needed to succeed in the workplace.

Benefits Include:

  • Real-World Experience: Students gain practical skills and professional insight that strengthen their résumés and career readiness.

  • Paid Opportunities: Interns earn while they learn through partnerships like the Express WBL experience.

  • Industry Connections: Students begin building their professional network and relationships within their chosen field.

  • Career Exploration: Learners can participate in multiple internships with different employers or industries to discover the best fit.

  • Flexibility: If a placement isn’t the right match, students can be reassigned to another WBL opportunity through Express.

  • Shared Support: Schools and Express Employment Professionals work together to ensure each intern’s success.

  • Enhanced Career Development: The combined resources of CareerTech, schools, and Express provide students with personalized guidance and real-world preparation for their future careers.

Getting Started

Work-Based Learning (WBL) begins right at your school. Oklahoma CareerTech makes it easy for students to explore their interests, connect learning to real-world experiences, and take the next step toward a future career.

Here's how to get involved:

  • Update your ICAP: Follow or update your Individual Career Academic Plan (ICAP) at your school to identify your goals and interests.

  • Explore Careers: Take an interest survey on Oklahoma CareerGuide to discover careers that match your skills and passions.

  • Enroll in a CareerTech Program: Join a CareerTech program or course that aligns with your career pathway and prepares you for hands-on experiences.

  • Find a WBL Opportunity: Work with your teacher, counselor, or work-based learning coordinator to connect with a local employer and secure a WBL placement.

Through these steps, you’ll gain the experience, skills, and confidence needed to transition successfully from the classroom to your career.
