Indian Health

Indian Health refers to health services that are available to American Indians and/or Alaskan Natives (AI/AN). Care is available through the Indian Health Service (IHS), tribal clinics and hospitals, and urban Indian health facilities. Native Americans are usually identified by a certificate of degree of Indian blood (CDIB) card that is issued by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Most Indian health facilities will require each person to provide a CDIB card, and some tribal facilities may require only a tribal enrollment card or proof of eligibility for a CDIB card.

AI/AN Health and SoonerCare

Some AI/AN SoonerCare members prefer to receive most of their health care at Indian health facilities. This may be for a number of reasons, including cultural sensitivity. You can get services at any Indian health facility without a referral. However, your SoonerCare primary care physician may need to refer you for specialized services such as neurology, labs and X-rays, cardiology, etc., which may not be available at your Indian health clinic.

Choosing an AI/AN Health Provider

AI/AN SoonerCare members have the option to choose any provider in the Provider Directory as a primary care physician (PCP). The directory has a list of all PCPs, including a separate list for Indian health providers.

You may sign up for SoonerCare online at MySoonerCare.org or at any local Department of Human Services county office. Most Indian health facilities can assist you with an application for SoonerCare.

Indian Health and SoonerSelect

As an AI/AN SoonerCare member, you have the option to join SoonerSelect. You can enroll in either a health plan or dental plan or both.

During open enrollment, you will have the chance to pick your dental and health plans. If you choose not to opt-in to SoonerSelect, you will remain on SoonerCare. You will not lose Indian Health SoonerCare coverage if you choose not to join SoonerSelect.

AI/AN members can enroll in a SoonerSelect health and/or dental plan. Health plans cover medically necessary prescriptions, health services and behavioral health services. Dental plans cover medically necessary preventive and restorative dental care. Medically necessary orthodontic services will be available for children under 21 years of age.

AI/AN members who choose to opt-in and enroll in a SoonerSelect plan may disenroll at any time. If you choose to disenroll from SoonerSelect, you will not be able to join SoonerSelect again until the next open enrollment period.
