Nursing Home Care

Nursing home care is another type of long term care. It is meant for individuals who cannot care for their needs in the home or in the community.  Nursing homes, also called skilled nursing facilities, provide residential care for individuals who do not require hospitalization but need the 24-hour care they cannot get at home. Some nursing homes are set up like a hospital with staff members providing medical care. Nursing homes also provide a wide range of other services:

  • Short Term Nursing Home Care – This is care that helps a person who needs care after a surgery or an acute illness or injury.  It is care for a short time to help the person recover. Short term nursing home care is also known as rehabilitation care.

  • Long Term Nursing Home Care – This is care when the person is unable to perform daily activities on their own. That means things like eating, bathing, dressing, transferring, and using the bathroom. This care also offers help for persons that may have a long-lasting or terminal illness or cognitive illness, such as Alzheimer’s. For these residents, the nursing home is more than a facility, it is their home.
