ODMHSAS to purchase SSM Health facility for Griffin Memorial Hospital relocation

Thursday, November 13, 2025

The Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS) is purchasing the SSM Health facility located at 2129 S.W. 59th Street in southwest Oklahoma City. The acquisition will allow Griffin Memorial Hospital’s 120 beds to move to a modern, centrally located facility, improving access to care and streamlining operations.

The $60 million investment — $18.5 million for the property purchase and $41.5 million for upgrades and renovations — comes from American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds originally set aside for the construction of the Donahue Behavioral Health Hospital. Rising construction costs prompted the agency to reimagine the project, focusing on renovation rather than building from the ground up.

“When I looked at the agency’s budget, it was clear I needed to resolve this longstanding funding issue without creating new costs for taxpayers,” said Interim Commissioner Greg Slavonic. “Now we have a clear path forward for relocating beds from Griffin Memorial Hospital that will reduce operational challenges and expand access to behavioral health care for Oklahomans.”

The facility’s central location near major intersections and public transit will make it easier for patients to reach care and reduce the burden on law enforcement transporting urban patients. Operating from a single, modern facility is expected to streamline administrative functions and improve efficiency across the state system.

Renovation of the facility will be executed in phases, with the first phase expected to begin this winter. The move marks a significant step in the agency’s efforts to turn the page on past obstacles and strengthen behavioral health care statewide. Additional information will be shared with the public as the project advances.
