Oklahoma Healthy Brain Initiative (OHBI) Coalition

The Oklahoma Healthy Brain Initiative Coalition is comprised of different organizations, caregivers, and people living with the disease from across the state. Our goal is to break the silos of those working to provide better care and resources for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias in Oklahoma. We will evaluate what resources we have, what is missing, and/or feel we need in regards to Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

We will revise and update the Alzheimer’s State Plan with these evaluations in mind and the 25 actions laid out in the Healthy Brain Initiative. The 4 workgroups (Policy Development, Workforce Development, Public Education, & Data and Surveillance) will be working collaboratively to create these materials.

Vision

To advance brain health in Oklahoma.

The Road Map Series sets the course for local and state public health agencies and their partners. The 25 HBI Road Map Series actions fall into the four essential services of Public Health to make sure the integration of initiatives addressing Alzheimer’s disease can be done easily and effectively. The four essential service domains of Public Health are:

  • Develop Policies and Mobilize Partnerships (P)
  • Monitor and Evaluate (M)
  • Educate and Empower (E)
  • Assure a Competent Workforce (W)

The actions among these four domains are guided by three core principles:

  • Eliminate Health Disparities
  • Collaborate Across Multiple Sectors
  • Leverage Resources for Sustained Impact

The Oklahoma Healthy Brain Initiative Coalition is focusing on four of the action items for the new state plan. These Road Map Series actions are:

  • P-1: Promote the use of effective interventions and best practices to protect brain health, address cognitive impairment, and help meet the needs of caregivers for people with dementia.
  • M-3: Use data gleaned through available surveillance strategies and other sources to inform the public health program and policy response to cognitive health, impairment, and caregiving.
  • E-1: Educate the public about brain health and cognitive aging, changes that should be discussed with a health professional, and benefits of early detection and diagnosis.
  • W-5: Strengthen the competencies of professionals who deliver healthcare and other care services to people with dementia through interprofessional training and other strategies.
