English Elective Competencies
Competencies provide a pathway for teachers who are looking to guide their students to the next level when specific academic standards do not exist. Competencies are available for schools and districts that have not already established competencies for creative writing and mythology. Teachers of creative writing and mythology must hold a certificate in English.
The creative writing competencies are based on established expectations within the creative writing classrooms of Oklahoma as well as essential skills gleaned from other states. During the 2024-2025 school year, every high school creative writing teacher in Oklahoma had the opportunity to provide feedback on these competencies. This guidance will help teachers to plan interesting and engaging creative writing courses for their students.
The mythology competencies are based on established expectations within the mythology classrooms of Oklahoma as well as essential skills gleaned from across the nation. During the 2025-2026 school year, every high school mythology teacher in Oklahoma had the opportunity to provide feedback on these competencies. This guidance will help teachers to plan interesting and engaging mythology courses for their students.
