OSDH Breastfeeding Educator Course

About the Course

The Breastfeeding Educator Workshop is designed to prepare Nutritionists, Breastfeeding Peer Counselors, Nurses, and WIC CPAs to manage early breastfeeding issues with accuracy and confidence based on the AAP guidelines for the promotion, protection, and support of breastfeeding. Care strategies to support exclusive breast milk feeding during the hospital stay are emphasized. Workshop sessions are based on the course topic list provided by the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative for the U.S. This course has been approved for 12.25 CERPS by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE).

The Breastfeeding Educator Course is scheduled for April 30-May 1, 2024. The class times are 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM both days. The training will be held at Castle Falls located at 820 MacArthur Blvd. Oklahoma City 37127.

This course is approved for OSDH staff, Independent WIC staff, and Tribal WIC staff only.

Registration deadline is March 29, 2024.

About the Presenter

Alexis Vakakes is a Registered Nurse and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant based in Helena, Alabama. She received her BSN from The Capstone College of Nursing at the University of Alabama in 2010 and her IBCLC certification in 2014. Over the past 14 years, she has worked in areas including pediatrics (hospital & clinic settings), Labor and Delivery, and Lactation for both Well Baby and NICU units. Alexis has presented on the state level topics including supporting babies with ankyloglossia, statistical analysis, mastitis treatment protocols, and providing Breastfeeding Educator Workshops to healthcare workers. She currently serves as the Clinical Coordinator of the Lactation Department at Brookwood Baptist Medical Center in Homewood, Alabama.
